- | OVERVIEW
- -------------------------
- Here is another virtual 3D, interactive animation from the author
- of Night Bird, WaterVision, Liberty Bell, and XYZ++. In Virtual
- Winter, you are standing outside on a brisk, winter's evening,
- viewing a colorfully decorated evergreen tree. A gentle snow is
- falling all around you. As time progresses the snowflakes gradually
- increase in number.
-
-
- -------------------------
- | PROGRAM NOTES
- -------------------------
- Virtual Winter has been optimized for 386 machines with VGA graphics,
- and will only run on that hardware. If you are not sure what type of
- machine you are using, go ahead and try the program, by typing WINTER
- at the DOS prompt. It will politely inform you if it does not find
- the right stuff.
-
- Following is a description of the keyboard commands available
- to you for altering the animation in progress.
-
-
- -----------------
- | System Commands
- -----------------
- !F1` ~-` !Display Help Window
- At any time, press F1 to see a help window describing a summary
- of the keyboard commands. While these commands are showing, you
- still have full control of the keyboard. To exit the help mode,
- press ESC.
-
- !F10` ~-` !Display Current Settings
- At any time, press F10 to display the values and states of
- several of the animation settings.
-
- !ESC` ~-` !Exit the Program
- The first time you press ESC, the shareware message will appear.
- Press ESC to exit the shareware screen, and return to DOS.
-
-
- --------------------
- | Adjusting the Snow
- --------------------
- !A` ~-` !Add Snow
- You may force the animation to display more snow by pressing A.
- Each time you press A, 25 new snowflakes will be added to the
- scene. Be patient, because you will not immediately see the new
- snow, since it starts out of view, far above the tree.
-
- !R` ~-` !Remove Snow
- You may reduce the number of snowflakes by pressing R. Each
- time you press R, 25 snowflakes are removed from the animation.
-
- !S` ~-` !Snow Faster
- You may increase the speed of the snow by pressing S.
-
- !X` ~-` !Snow Slower
- You may decrease the speed of the snow by pressing X.
-
-
- --------------------
- | Adjusting the Tree
- --------------------
- !T` ~-` !New Tree
- When you press T, the system will remove the current tree and
- regrow a new one. Since the tree generation process uses
- randomness, every generated tree will look different. Keep
- pressing T until a tree is produced that is pleasing to you.
-
- !J` ~-` !Reduce Branches
- To create a new tree with fewer branches, press J. Selecting a
- tree with fewer branches will allow the animation to run faster.
-
- !K` ~-` !Add Branches
- To create a new tree with more branches, press K. You may
- continue pressing K until the tree is as full as you wish, then
- press T to regenerate trees with the new branch count.
-
-
- ---------------------------
- | Adjusting the Tree Lights
- ---------------------------
- !N` ~-` !New Colors
- Press N to change the tree light colors. When the lights are in
- the Mono-Color mode, N will change all the lights to a new
- random color. When the lights are in the Mixed-Color mode, N
- will come up with a new random collection of colors.
-
- !M` ~-` !Change Color Mode
- Press M to change the Color Mode between Mixed-Color mode, where
- every bulb is a random color, and Mono-Color mode, where all
- bulbs are the same color.
-
- !B` ~-` !Blinking Mode
- Press B to switch the lights between Blinking ON and Blinking
- OFF modes.
-
- !L` ~-` !Light Switch
- Press L to turn the tree lights ON/OFF. This command does not
- turn off the tree star. The star has its own controls described
- below.
-
- !F7` ~-` !Change Star Color
- Press F7 to switch the star color between WHITE, or a NEW RANDOM
- color. This command only controls the star, and leaves the main
- tree lights unchanged.
-
- !F8` ~-` !Tree Star On/Off
- Press F8 to turn the tree star ON/OFF. This command only
- controls the star, and leaves the main tree lights unchanged.
-
- !F9` ~-` !Auto-Color Mode
- Press F9 to switch the system between Auto-Color mode, where the
- lights change color and mode randomly, and Manual-Color mode,
- where only manual changes can be made to the colors.
-
- When the program starts, Auto-Color is already on, but it is
- disabled whenever any of the main tree light commands are used:
- N, M, B or L. Changing the tree star does not affect the state
- of the Auto-Color mode.
-
-
- ---------------------------
- | Changing Your Viewpoint
- ---------------------------
- !U` ~-` !Move Up
- Press U to float upwards.
-
- !D` ~-` !Move Down
- Press D to sink downwards.
-
- !C` ~-` !Move Closer
- Press C to move closer to the tree.
-
- !F` ~-` !Move Farther
- Press F to move farther away from the tree.
-
- !Z` ~-` !Zoom In
- Press Z to magnify your view of the tree.
-
- !W` ~-` !Zoom Out
- Press W to decrease your viewing magnification, allowing for a
- more wide-angle perspective of the tree.
-
- !F3` ~-` !Look Down
- Press F3 to tilt the direction of your view downwards.
-
- !F4` ~-` !Look Up
- Press F4 to tilt the direction of your view upwards.
-
-
- -------------------------------
- | Adjusting the Animation Speed
- -------------------------------
- !-Fn option` ~-` !Adjust Frame Rate
- The program will continue adding snowflakes to the scene until
- it reaches an animation rate of 20 frames per second. So the
- faster your machine, the more snowflakes will appear. You may
- adjust this target frame rate at the command line with the -F
- option. For example start the program as follows: WINTER -F10,
- to adjust the frame rate to 10 frames per second. Lower frame
- rates allow for more scene detail at the expense of animation
- smoothness.
-
- !F5` ~-` !Reduce Delay
- !F6` ~-` !Increase Delay
- To reduce screen flicker, the animation pauses for a fraction of
- a second between each frame. You may decrease the amount of
- delay with the F5 command, or increase it with F6. Lower delay
- values will speed up the program, at the expense of screen
- flicker.
-
- Note: This flickering can be reduced by matching this command
- with an increase in scene detail, using the ADD SNOW, or ADD
- BRANCHES commands.
-
-
- ----------------------------
- | Other Command Line Options
- ----------------------------
- !-o` ~-` !Disable Opening Messages
- Start the program with the -o option to disable the title
- screen, and the F1 Help reminder message, that display at the
- beginning of the program.
-

- | SHAREWARE OFFER
- -------------------------
- Virtual Winter 1.1 is a shareware product. You are encouraged to
- make copies of it, and distribute them far and wide, as long as you
- don't charge anything for them, or alter the program in any way.
-
- Feel free to pass Virtual Winter along to your friends, associates,
- or to other computer enthusiasts on your favorite BBS. Please ONLY
- distribute the self-extracting, or zipped installation file, so the
- complete package including this shareware info will remain intact.
-
- Registration for Virtual Winter is $12.00, which includes shipping
- and handling. When you register, you will receive the most recent
- version of the program, plus two BONUS titles: WaterVision, and
- Liberty Bell.
-
-
- | WATERVISION 1.0
- This is another in a series of interactive animations which
- celebrate the dynamic beauty of the natural world. You are in
- control of up to nine realistic water fountains.
-
- You can change the behavior of the fountains with one set of
- controls, or use other controls to move around in the scene. You can
- float above the fountains, orbit around them, or stand right in the
- middle of them if you don't mind getting wet. The graphical control
- panel is fun and easy to use, with either your mouse or keyboard.
-
- Realism is achieved in WaterVision by independently animating every
- drop of water -- and there can be hundreds of them depending on the
- speed of your computer. Watch the water surge into the air, then
- fall gracefully back to earth by the force of gravity.
-
- WaterVision requires a 386 computer with VGA graphics, or better.
-
-
- | LIBERTY BELL 1.1
- In Liberty Bell, you are provided with your own personal slot
- machine that uses the same symbols, arranged in the same order, and
- displays the same payoffs as the real thing.
-
- This is an authentic simulation of the 21-Bell Nickel Slot
- Machine. I found a description of the machine's design several years
- ago in the book, SCARNE'S NEW COMPLETE GUIDE TO GAMBLING, by John
- Scarne, and have been perfecting this simulation ever since.
-
- Liberty Bell requires EGA graphics or better.
-
- -------------------------
- | XYZ++
- -------------------------
- Virtual Winter was designed with the 3D graphics class library
- XYZ++, by Nicholas Centanni. The library is available directly from
- the author at this time, and will be available as shareware in the
- first quarter of 1994.
-
- If you are interested in the XYZ++ class library, you may read more
- about it by running the program READXYZ, which you should have
- received with this package.
-
- The registration for XYZ++ is $35.00, which includes shipping and
- handling. It includes the source code to Night Bird, WaterVision,
- Liberty Bell, a demonstration of a virtual reality control panel, the
- complete source code to all of the library class functions, seven
- other small sample programs to get you started, and a printed manual.
-
- If you did not receive the program READXYZ with your package, and
- you are interested in XYZ++, let us know, and we will be happy to
- forward you a copy of the description.
-
